A neck lift is a surgical procedure designed to tighten the neck and smooth the jawline and the jowl.
The names cervicoplasty and platysmaplasty are associated with neck lifting and the procedure often involves tightening both the platysma muscle and skin along with fat sculpting. Dr. O’Connell believes that the neck and face should appear as one harmonious aesthetic unit and, while neck lifts can be performed alone, they are often combined with facelifts and liposuction.
A loose neck with a poorly defined jawline can reveal a lot about our age as well as our overall health and fitness level. Neck laxity along with the associated bulging in the area under the chin and jowl areas can result from heredity, weight changes, or simply the aging process. These problems are sometimes known as submental fullness and turkey wattles and a Westport neck lift at Total Aesthetics can address these issues. By smoothing your jawline and eliminating those fatty bulges you can enhance your appearance with a more youthful and defined neck.

While liposuction is utilized during many neck lifts, for younger patients with minimal laxity, liposuction may be all that is needed to eliminate the bulge below the chin (the so-called submental lipoma) and contour the jawline. In our practice in Westport neck lifting with liposuction is usually performed with local anesthesia.
With meticulous placement, Dr. O’Connell utilizes injectable filler to enhance the contour of the jawline, especially in the area in front of the jowl. This office-based procedure provides a stronger, more youthful and defined jawline.
Botox can be used. It temporarily decreases the appearance of the bands (“platysma bands”) that run vertically from under the chin. No anesthesia is required for this in-office procedure.
Kybella and CoolSculpting are non-surgical techniques to contour submental fat, also known as a “double chin”. While these techniques would likely not be performed concurrently with a neck lift, they can be performed independently or prior to, or following a neck lift, to enhance the result.
All surgery carries uncertainty and risk. A discussion of the alternatives and potential complications is an important part of your preoperative consultation(s) with Dr. O’Connell.
It’s normal to feel some stiffness and tightness in your neck immediately following the procedure. There will commonly be some bruising and swelling which will resolve over the first few weeks. In general most Westport neck lift patients will see themselves return to sedentary work after approximately 10 days.
