Its healing properties are legendary and it’s one of the most exciting new developments in aesthetic medicine - Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP injections).
At Total Aesthetics, we're at the forefront of other cutting-edge roles for PRP injections, including PRP Breast Enhancement (also known as PRP breast augmentation and Vampire Breast Lift) and the use of PRP for enhancement of sexual function.
At Total Aesthetics in Westport PRP injections are offered as a stand-alone treatment for facial aging, colloquially called a "Vampire Facial", and also to enhance the results of laser skin rejuvenation – including our own unique PRP LaserPeel. (We also use Platelet-Rich Plasma for stimulation of hair growth.)
Safely and easily obtained from your own blood, then processed in an entirely closed system, the platelets are concentrated and their growth factors are utilized to enhance the healing process, and most importantly, build collagen. The potential applications for this natural type of collagen induction therapy are nearly limitless.

PRP stands for “Platelet-Rich Plasma” and it has been used in human medicine since the 1970s. Because PRP is an autologous substance consisting of a carefully prepared and concentrated fraction of your own blood, it is considered “safer” than dermal fillers and neurotoxins by some. The platelets in PRP contain many important growth factors that work synergistically to stimulate collagen growth, improve skin appearance and activate dormant hair follicles.
PRP is derived from your own blood, not from hyaluronic acid or other substances found in dermal fillers. Because Platelet-Rich Plasma works by stimulating growth of your own natural collagen, it’s different from some wrinkle fillers like Restylane and Juvederm. PRP injections can soften and volumize the face and also improve the tone, texture, and appearance of the overlying skin. PRP injections can also soften hollows and dark circles under the lower eyelids and be used for treatment of nasolabial folds and marionette lines.
While it may be possible to achieve your desired results with one treatment, usually three sessions spaced four to six weeks apart are recommended for facial rejuvenation with PRP.
In addition to treating facial aging, PRP injections have been used to treat sports injuries and provide other functional medicinal benefits. At Total Aesthetics, we also use PRP for hair loss, by promoting stimulation of hair growth. The end result of these treatments is fuller, thicker hair, in approximately 80 percent of patients.
Like all medical procedures, PRP injections carry risks of side effects and complications. PRP side effects are usually limited to swelling, redness, and bruising at the harvest and treatment sites. A full discussion of the risks of PRP injections Westport patients may encounter, and appropriate alternative treatments to consider, is an important part of your confidential consultation with Dr. O’Connell at Total Aesthetics.
The term PRP simply refers to platelet-rich-plasma with its collagen building growth factors that are contained within the platelets. PRFM stands for the Platelet-Rich Fibrin Matrix - this is the key to the Selphyl System for PRP. Selphyl is a completely closed system that can convert PRP to PRFM with the addition of a precise amount of calcium chloride. The fibrin matrix that is produced serves as a three dimensional scaffold that maintains the platelets at the injection site and slowly releases them over about seven days. One advantage of this slow, sustained release of the platelets is to avoid overwhelming the body's ability to utilize the PRP.
Softens And Volumizes Facial Hollows
Aging can lead to areas of volume loss through displacement and loss of natural facial fat and thinning of the skin. When injected into areas such as the tear-trough, PRP injections begin the repair process through the formation of collagen. Over time, the results become more noticeable as the contours are restored with softening of hollows and improvement of those annoying dark circles.
Brightens And Smooths Your Complexion
Dullness and uneven texture of the skin can also be improved with PRP injections. As collagen is produced, a youthful fullness and glow emerges along with a brighter and smoother complexion. The results look incredibly natural, and your brighter, more youthful complexion will enhance your overall appearance.
Repairs Fine Lines Wrinkles And Scars
Fine lines, wrinkles, and acne scars can permanently mar the skin and cause you to look older. As PRP is injected, activated platelets begin a repair process for your damaged skin. Over time, PRP gradually softens fine lines, wrinkles, and scars so that your skin appears smoother, fuller, and more even in tone. PRP is also beneficial in treating nasolabial folds, marionette lines, and the adjacent cheek.
Total Aesthetics is pleased to offer the premium A-PRP system from Regen Lab. Regen Lab is located in Le Mont-sur-Lausanne, in the heart of the Leman lake region of Switzerland, and all their devices are made in their Swiss facility.
The RegenKit has been shown to produce the highest platelet concentration in PRP with optimal viability. With the Regen Lab system, contaminants are minimized and the white blood cell level is drastically reduced with a 96.7% depletion of pro-inflammatory granulocytes producing a premium type of PRP known as A-PRP.
RegenKit yields >80% platelet recovery with >99.7% red blood cell depletion. At Total Aesthetics, we utilize the disposable one-step closed system RegenKit for each and every patient, and preparation requires less than 10 minutes.
PRP is used at Total Aesthetics in combination with laser resurfacing to create our signature skin rejuvenation treatment: the PRP LaserPeel. Your skin will look softer and smoother with improved tone, quality, and texture. Recovery can involve just a few days of flaking. Results begin to appear three to four weeks after treatment and continue to improve over time. Because the PRP LaserPeel combines PRP injections with laser resurfacing, it speeds healing and enhances the results.
At Total Aesthetics in Westport PRP injections are accomplished using Selphyl Platelet-Rich Fibrin Matrix (PRFM). Preparation with Selphyl minimizes the amount of undesired red and white blood cells in the PRP, as well as the risk of contamination. With Selphyl, patients receive the next generation PRP with a safe treatment that requires just 30 minutes.
In the body, platelets release growth factors as a reaction to tissue injury, promoting a natural biological healing response. With PRP, the concentration of platelets is higher and it’s focused at the site of the injection (the “injury”), enhancing the body’s ability to heal and promoting natural collagen growth.
PRP is harvested from the patient’s own blood and is natural to the body. Not only does this minimize the risk of side effects, but it also leads to more natural appearing results. Patients treated with PRP for facial aging can have a softer, more youthful appearance with a vibrant, natural glow.
Scars
PRP is extracted and injected without surgery and should not leave any visible scars - in fact, the injection of Platelet-Rich Plasma can be used to treat pre-existing scars.
Cost
When considering the cost of PRP injections Westport patients can expect the cost to be less than $1,000 per treatment. Dr. O’Connell will discuss the cost of your procedure with you during your consultation.
Recovery
After your treatment, you may temporarily have a red, flushed look, with occasional spotting in the treated areas. By the next day, you will likely feel ready to return to your normal life. Because PRP injections are made from your own cells, and processed in an entirely closed system, the risk of side effects is low. Any mild swelling, redness, or bruising usually fades within a few days.
Discomfort
Because we use AccuVein technology during the blood draw, discomfort and bruising are minimized. Patients may experience slight tenderness and minor bruising, but discomfort is minimal.
