What Is PRP?

PRP stands for “Platelet-Rich Plasma” and it has been used in human medicine since the 1970s. Because PRP is an autologous substance consisting of a carefully prepared and concentrated fraction of your own blood, it is considered “safer” than dermal fillers and neurotoxins by some. The platelets in PRP contain many important growth factors that work synergistically to stimulate collagen growth, improve skin appearance and activate dormant hair follicles.

How are PRP injections different from dermal fillers?

PRP is derived from your own blood, not from hyaluronic acid or other substances found in dermal fillers. Because Platelet-Rich Plasma works by stimulating growth of your own natural collagen, it’s different from some wrinkle fillers like Restylane and Juvederm. PRP injections can soften and volumize the face and also improve the tone, texture, and appearance of the overlying skin. PRP injections can also soften hollows and dark circles under the lower eyelids and be used for treatment of nasolabial folds and marionette lines.

How many PRP sessions are required?

While it may be possible to achieve your desired results with one treatment, usually three sessions spaced four to six weeks apart are recommended for facial rejuvenation with PRP.

What is the difference between PRP and PRFM?

The term PRP simply refers to platelet-rich-plasma with its collagen building growth factors that are contained within the platelets. PRFM stands for the Platelet-Rich Fibrin Matrix - this is the key to the Selphyl System for PRP. Selphyl is a completely closed system that can convert PRP to PRFM with the addition of a precise amount of calcium chloride. The fibrin matrix that is produced serves as a three dimensional scaffold that maintains the platelets at the injection site and slowly releases them over about seven days. One advantage of this slow, sustained release of the platelets is to avoid overwhelming the body's ability to utilize the PRP.
